Sr. Scientist, Viral Vector (AAV)

Office Location: San Diego, CA

Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:  ARWR) is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company that develops medicines that treat intractable diseases by silencing the genes that cause them. Using a broad portfolio of RNA chemistries and efficient modes of delivery, Arrowhead therapies trigger the RNA interference mechanism to induce rapid, deep, and durable knockdown of target genes. RNA interference, or RNAi, is a mechanism present in living cells that inhibits the expression of a specific gene, thereby affecting the production of a specific protein. Arrowhead’s RNAi-based therapeutics leverage this natural pathway of gene silencing.

Arrowhead is focused on developing innovative drugs for diseases with a genetic basis, typically characterized by the overproduction of one or more proteins that are involved with disease. The depth and versatility of our RNAi technologies enables us to potentially address conditions in virtually any therapeutic area and pursue disease targets that are not otherwise addressable by small molecules and biologics. Arrowhead is leading the field in bringing the promise of RNAi to address diseases outside of the liver, and our clinical pipeline includes disease targets in the liver and lung with a promising pipeline of preclinical candidates.

Arrowhead’s corporate headquarters is in Pasadena, CA with research and development teams in Madison, WI and San Diego, CA.  Our employees are nimble, science-driven innovators who are collaborating to bring new therapies to patients in need.

The Position

Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals is seeking a Senior Scientist to join the Virology group within the Biology Department. The successful candidate will focus on Adeno-Associate Virus (AAV) and other viral vectors development to use for preclinical studies. They will have expertise with various skills including AAV packaging, production, purification, and characterization. They will interface with the viral vector core team to coordinate between the upstream and downstream processing. They will be joining a team of highly motivated and experienced scientists and will contribute to the success of Arrowhead development programs.

Responsibilities

  • This position performs preclinical scale development activities for the production, purification, and characterization of AAV vectors
  • Serve as technical expert on downstream process development, including harvest and clarification; purification for target AAVs, removal of impurities and contaminating viruses, virus like particles, etc
  • Independently design and conduct purification projects and process development activities including column and membrane chromatography, filtration, and membrane separations and scale-up
  • Drive design of experimental studies needed to support process improvements to enhance process reliability, improve process yields and develop strategies for scale-up
  • Partner with the upstream and analytical leads in Research Sciences to build effective strategies for AAV candidates and develop next-generation viral vector models
  • Supervise downstream scientists and associate scientists
  • Manage downstream lab facilities, operations, and upcoming build outs
  • Design/implement viral vector transfection methods
  • Design/implement chromatography methods for viral vector purification
  • Participation in other virology programs
  • Execute research and production timelines to meet program and corporate objectives

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, virology, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience or equivalent
  • The ideal candidate will have broad hands-on expertise in AAV production encompassing both upstream and downstream processes in an industry setting.
  • A strong understanding of AAV biology and the fundamentals of AAV purification operations including chromatography and/or membrane separations, specifically using AKTA systems
  • Demonstrated experience developing successful AAV production, purification, and characterization for preclinical studies.
  • Proven ability to work independently, effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion to meet schedules and deadlines.

Preferred:

  • Experience with other viral vectors production such as Adenovirus and Lentivirus systems
